The Creative Process for Readers & Writers:
How Craft Elements Shape Memories into Meaning
Saturday, June 7, 2008
9:30 A.M.- 3:00 P.M.
$35.
Writers need tools just like sculptors and painters do. We can
fall in love with a piece of sculpture not knowing what
materials were used; or in an oil landscape, never knowing how
many tubes of paint went onto the canvas. The craft of writing,
however, is better appreciated when readers practice identifying
the tools of the trade used to enhance texture and meaning.
We will identify literary tools, becoming both better writers and
readers through intense examination of memoir and the
personal essay forms. Authors may include Jamaica Kincaid,
Terry Tempest Williams, Scott Russell Sanders, Virginia Woolf,
Barry Lopez, and, of course, Annie Dillard.
The workshop is informal and our time will be spent
both indoors and out. There will be time for writing and
honing your craft. Focus will be on writing personal essays,
which could be part of a larger memoir. Space is limited.
Deadline for registration is May 29.
Make checks payable to Maryanne Coronna.

Young Writers:
A Day Camp for Kids Who Like to Write
(and even for those who think they don't!)
Ages 8 and up
3 Sessions: June 24, 25, & 26 (9:00 - 12:00)
$50.
Have you ever looked at a famous portrait or landscape painting and
wondered what it would look like if the artist had chosen words instead of
paint to tell his or her story? Let's try it! This is a fun way to learn how to
write creatively. As we explore a different theme each week, you will express
yourself in words that "paint" a picture.
Session 1: Landscapes: Nature Writing
Session 2: Abstract Art: Making Sense out of "so many thoughts in my head."
Session 3: The Self Portrait: Stories about Ourselves -- Memoir
Parents are invited to attend a reading by the students on the final day, June
26, at noon. (This will be optional.)
We will spend plenty of time outdoors. Juice and water will be provided
throughout the sessions. Wear sturdy shoes for hiking for session 2.
Space is limited.
